  1. Well other than the Latern Parade in St.Martins tonight Its looking like the Oswestry Bonfire and Fireworks display is the only one in the area. Didn't there used to be one in every village??
  2. Fisherman..... found this bit of information, Lodge or Preesgwyn, Furnace, Hall. Listed in 1860, also in 1891 (shafts 525ft and 354ft deep), furnace ventilated, used ponies and donkeys for haulage. Connected to the railway, closed about 1890 Moreton Hall Nos.1 & 2, Hall, Preesgwyn. Connected to canal and railway by tramway. 160yds deep to Main Seam Quinta or Trehowell. Listed in 1860, 37yds down to Main Seam. Chirk Bank. Believed to be the scene of a canal embankment collapse in 1816, it dammed the river downstream causing the flooding of many pits in the valley. No lives were lost but the horses perished. Hopefully some of our local historians will be along soon to give some more info...........
  3. Sounds interesting...... Let me know what you have planned might be able to help with your shoe leather :)
  4. Thanks for the comments and as you mention thanks to all the people who use this site, after all its the contributions that truly make it what it is. Some interesting comments in the report which I will get around to addressing very soon. Also an intersting point was that Networked Neighbourhoods got their best response to any of the online questionaires they have done from Community Online.
  5. Any feedback about this? Anyone go along?
  6. I am with you there, I knew very little about it until I saw an advert on the TV. Had a quick look at this website http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/police/police-crime-commissioners/
  7. Thanks for everyone's comments and messages of support, couldn't of done it without you lot. I would be just sat here talking to myself.... which I have been known to do. :) Look out for news of the birthday event very soon
  8. Actually reading your post again I spotted it..... Should pay more attention
  9. Am I right in thinking that the topic is also being discussed at the Parish Council Meeting?

  11. I am posting a message to say that as of today I am stepping down from my position as Youth Leader at Weston Rhyn Youthclub. I have been leader of the youthclub for just over 4 years and feel for various reasons that its time for a break. Unfortunately this means that the youthclub in Weston Rhyn closes its doors and no longer operates. Thanks for everyone's support of the years.
  12. Geoff, Many people will read this topic, but I can understand that people may not want to make themselves known on a public forum or in a fight against neighbours. Maybe you could ask people to PM you to retain their anonymity.
  13. Am i right in thinking this carpark is on the opposite side of Ashlands Road to the Poachers Pocket? We will have to see if we can get some volunteers together from the forum for the planting and to support the opening.
  14. Andy, See if you can get hold of a copy of last weeks Oswestry Advertizer. There's an article about UnLtd.
  15. I think we need to coordinate our efforts between interested parties. Over the last year or so I have seen maybe groups appearing to carry out the same work, I understand different groups have possible different agendas and funding streams but it seems that we could all save a lot of time and money by carring out one coordinated effort. At the moment I am thinking that interested parties would be......... The area youthclubs........ or coordinated as 3PYA (3PYA recently carried out a survey with SYA in the area) UnLtd - They could fund any ideas that young people have for activities Scout Groups etc. The Big Local Group What would be great is that we could bring all this research together to create one single paper about the youth of the area, their needs, inspirations and motivations and then groups/organisations can respond to this. Maybe it could be something that a local undergraduate could write as part of their studies.
  16. Interesting project from the Design Council with £10k on offer http://www.designcouncil.org.uk/our-work/CABE/Communities/Design-Your-Neighbourhood/
  17. Skilful driving does not come with age, I see a lot of truly appauling driving from people of all ages, the older generation included, many of which are also driving too SLOWLY for the roads. Above all, people drive inappropriately for the conditions/surroundings and show lack of understanding of the rules and regulations of the road and their vehicles. I was just highlighting that its not just about speed.
  18. Although the destination is the same would the route via Gobowen and assume on to St.Martins be a slightly longer journey and therefore cost more?
  19. People are taught to drive at the speed limits as a demonstration that they know what they are. Your driving speed is in not necessary an indication to your ability, I see some truly shocking driving from people, driving too fast and too slow. Driving is all about common sense, most lanes will have the national speed limit of 60mph which in most conditions is too fast and due care and attention is required. However, I also think some people drive way too slowly. Ultimately it's about bad driving and lack of applying some common sense, not just about driving "too fast"
  20. Sorry I wasnt around on Monday Andy, would have been good to have a catch up. Unfortunately I had to pop to Ibiza for work :(
  21. I was thinking about this just the other day. Do you think our villages and Communities have grown too large? or are we just doing our own thing, maybe we aren't communicating anymore. You still see close knit communities doing a lot activities together....... Chirk Bank and Bronygarth for example, both smaller communities which leads me to my thought is our growth our community downfall?
  22. Didn't make it myself but there looked like there was a few cars so I assume it was well attended. Definitely in agreement about the lack of provisions for young people. Just take a look at WR playing field and its pretty much empty green field and then compare to St.Martins and Gobowen, we are a long way behind.
  23. Seem to be looking good so far, its a shame that such an old building and business disappears from the village but I am as guilty as others in not using it so can't really complain too much.
  24. Geoff, I think "this ongoing bleat will go away" is a little harsh, its obvioulsy something a lot of people feel strongly about. I ride thousands of miles a year and niave to think we should not expect to never encounter another vehicle. I have also ridden a lot of cycle routes around towns and city's some people have really embraced the idea and its impressive to see. The route is not just getting from A to B and not just about cyclists. Oswestry could have something really great here. As we are talking about cost and impracticality lets just compare this to a railway...... If it were me, I would put to sleep any idea of opening a rail route and get a cycle/pedestrian route moving.
