'In Praise of Oswestry' by Guto'r Glyn (15th century)

In coiffure and dress no women excel Those who in Oswalds’s city dwell. Adorned in Cheapside’s merchandise, Harmonious her citizens, and wise.” From ‘In Praise of Oswestry’ by Guto'r Glyn (transl DM Lloyd) In the 15th century one of the most well known Welsh poets was Guto’r Glyn. At that time poets were held in great esteem and received patronage from landowners and gentry. His poems are full of colourful descriptions of every day life and allow us modern readers to glimpse s

Chirk Triathlon complete....

Well, 15th April saw the Chirk Triathlon take place so did the winter training pay off? I was 4 minutes faster than last year in my personal best time of 1hr 14mins 39 seconds. Strangely, I feel disappointed somehow.... 4 minutes on last year is a fair chunk of time but maybe I thought there was more in the tank. Right, next triathlon....... Cheshire.

Three weeks to go!

Every year I do the same, I think its because you have to enter Chirk triathlon so early (6 months) that I think the triathlon is way off and suddenly it just 3 weeks to go, hmmm I am ready? Well I have probably trained more than any other year, got the aerowheels and the pointy aero helmet, (yes they do look daft! ) so I guess I should be, just don't quite feel that way. Only one way to find out, Sunday 15th April will reveal all. I also said way back in January that I wanted

Week Eight..... Maximum Heart

Its been a bit of a busy week, training somewhere near a full week. Also managed to squeeze in some rides and a trial run of the Chirk Tri course around the weekends Rugby and Football. Sunday I thought it was time I have a blast on the TT bike with the Zipps fitted. As pictured..... The tyres stayed on! So my gluing must be OK. Although with 150psi in the tyres I can't see them coming off. This weeks turbo session, supposed to "the easy week" then I was asked if it was about time

Week Seven.......

Couldn't think of a title for this week, training has been a little bit less than normal this week, Valentines day and other commitments took priority. Got in a couple of runs, which are going pretty well, (averaging close to 7minute 30 second mile now) just one trip to the gym. Turbo training was a pretty good session this week, burning nearly 1200kcals! Managed to squeeze in an hour ride on the roads before watching the pro's show us how its done on the track. So all in all, not a

Week Five & Six...... Ice Skating

Missed the week 5 update, can't recall why now. Perhaps I was still suffering from being frozen out on the bike in sub zero conditions, didnt quite feel that cold when I left but certainly was when I returned. Hands were frozen and couldn't hold the bars as well as feet like blocks of ice., and the pain when it all thawed out was..... well not pleasant :( No Wednesday night footy so I have been back at Turbo's and squeezing the gym sessions/swims so all going reasonably well. Slight

Week Four...... Sticky Situations

Well here we are, end of January and entering my 4th week of "training" This week has been a little shuffled about due to the Carling and FA Cup competitions, but Liverpool came out of that well :D Fitted in the 3 gym sessions, 2 runs and 2 swim drill sets. Got the Garmin sensor fitted to the bike now, so yesterdays ride was GPS tracked and monitoring speed, cadence and heart rate. Made the decision to get the tyre glued on to my 808 yesterday and to be honest it wasn't too bad a job, I

Week Three...... Turbo charged

Did my first training session with OOTri this week, a one hour turbo training session. For those of you who don't know, this where you use your bike on a roller so that you are stationary. Hard work, but I enjoyed it. Bit lost without a heart rate monitor and cadence sensor..... but thats all about to change with my new training toy, a lovely Garmin Forerunner 910XT :D Other than the turbo session training has consisted of 3 gym sessions, 3 swims (1500m drill sets). 2 bikes, 25miles an

Week Two..... Winter miles, Summer Smiles

Winter miles, summer smiles is a phrase triathletes and I am sure a few other sports people use. The theory being you get the hard work done in the winter months and reap the benefits during the summer race season. So week 1 of my training proper is complete, and its been a pretty good start. 4 sessions in the gym, 2 swims (1500 drill sets) and finally got out on the bike, a gentle 25 mile ride to Llanarmon in the cold, brrrrr. It also seems to have worked, 3kg lighter than last wee

Week One......

Well, what a trip to the gym that was. Haven't been for a while and how it showed! :o So I made a decision tonight, well more of a goal. The aim is to be 13kg lighter by the time Chirk Triathlon comes around, 15th April. So thats 14 weeks away, so here we go..... Week 1

Back to it....

After two lazy weeks of doing nothing over Christmas I thought it was time to get back training properly. So I kicked off with a 3 mile trail run around the area, haven't run for probably 10 weeks so it was a bit of a shock to the system and pretty slow, although I am going to blame that on the 13 stiles I jumped over ;) So thats the first session over with, might get out on the bike tomorrow and have a decent week training next week.

Too much time off......

Remind me not to take so much time off..... It's amazing how much fitness I have lost in the 4 weeks after the Great Birmingham Run. So I have been back in training for 3 weeks, so far its been 3 sessions in the gym each week and my 1500 metre swim set once a week. Good news is that the knee/ITB trouble at Birmingham seems to have gone and my shoulder feels like its finally getting back to full strength. Time to up the training and add in some run and bike work......

The History of Oswestry

All being well we should soon hear whether we have the go ahead for a new museum in Oswestry serving the area surrounding the place. Whilst waiting for the go ahead we have all been busy compiling a time line for the area and what a time line it is. Fantastical and exciting. Battles, wars, destruction, great charismatic leaders, legends, then development of transport links and trade in the industrial era. Today it is such a tranquil and sleepy backwater which looks as if nothing has ever hap

The beginning......

So I have done a few triathlons this year, 6 to be precise, I have the carbon fibre bike, the expensive aero wheels and tri clothing, all that's lacking is the talent. So I decided its time to get the serious training in and I decided to write a blog about my journey. So here it is, blog entry one, the beginning.......
