  1. I could hear a helicopter or helicopters flying round the other night too.
  2. Fisherman, There is a Parish Council meeting tonight with a open public section at the beginning, maybe you could ask your questions there. Also on the agenda, which you can download HERE You will see reference to the parish development in Section 6.
  3. I assume that is because Gobowen is on the Oswestry exchange and they are being upgraded to BT infinity. We over in Weston Rhyn are coming off the Chirk exchange and I think they still have women plugging in wires to connect calls. I used to find in Weston Rhyn the broadband speeds were very hit and miss, I was getting as low as 120k when the street not 50m away were getting 8mb at exactly the same time.
  4. I won't be going...... like Keith said, I'll be at work.
  5. Just seen a dog wondering around Pleasant View and then on High Street (around 2pm) where I tried to call/grab but had no luck. Its a big hound type dog and yellow (labrador type colour) and has a collar on.
  6. Thanks for the update Big Local, very thorough. My main problem with the @3pbizforum is that they follow over 2000 pretty much random people who have no connection with the area which attracts a follow back. They tweet every hour with pretty much the same message. The 500 followers are on the whole random and not local people, this is not, as you mention a draw back of Twitter, its the 3pbizforum pursuit of followers. What is also annoying is that I have sent them several messages and non of them get a response.
  7. Here's a link to the page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Selattyn-and-Gobowen-Parish-Council/540400995985164?ref=ts&fref=ts
  8. My other suggestion was to just do something.... anything organised by the Big Local and see if it creates public reaction. People are usually more likely to come out to complain. I recall a public meeting about the positining of a gossip shelter on Gobowen playing field and IIRC over 100 people came to a public meeting.
  9. Also, I have an idea when flicking through the book that I might take all the photos in the book again, so there will be a modern day version. I can always get out and take any pictures that you want for your research.
  10. I bought a copy of the book which arrived today. Amazon show it listed but doesn't ever seem to have it in stock. I got mine through Abebooks www.abebooks.co.uk although I paid rather more than the £13.99 shown on the back cover.
  11. Following the meeting I had a few ideas..... Could Big Local approach all local groups and ask for a representative? In theory the groups should be the 'local' representation BL are after and the ones who could benefit from the money. I am not sure that I have seen anyone from the Institute in Weston Rhyn and they could possibly benefit from the money and are a venue for all local groups. With regards to the LJC money for Job seeker/jobsearch, is this linked with the Institute in Weston Rhyn? They may be also eligible for UK Online money, up to £2000 although they need to be very quick! Maybe Big Local could speak to institutewatcher I would be interested to see some stats on Car Sharing in Communities like ours, to me it sounds like a lot of effort and I am not sure if I see it working. Did the entire St.Martins attendees come in one vehicle to the Big Local Meeting? I haven't seen any mention on here of the next Business Breakfast, lets have the details posted Big Local What I think would also be very useful is if we had someone in the Big Local group that could assist in Fund Finding, someone to go to who could advice of where to go to look for money for setting up and maintaining community groups and assitance in the completion of forms etc. The Community Champions and Community Journalists sounds a great idea, and to offer training to people who are interested would be a good incentive. There seems to be a big push to make sure that the group get to the minorites in the communities, but minorities are just that, minorities and at the moment we don't seem to be getting to the majorities! I think we need much better Big Local representation at some local events, take a look at the calendar events in December, there is a great opportunity to spread the word and draft in some support. I am somewhat worried when I see some of the other Big Local groups and the things they have done, maybe its just the ones we see in the newsletter being used as examples but to me its seems like we are so far behind.
  12. Guerilla Planting..........
  13. Simon, Yes the turnout was a little poor seeing as it had pretty good exposure across the internet and the press. I like the website, its clean, modern looking and a positive move for the BL team, gives their work some visible subtance and its a platform to show off there work. The website was put out to tender and could have been bid for by any 'local' expertise. The bid was indeed won by a 'wrexham' company but its worth noting thats it's owned by and the site was made by someone who grew up and still has family in St.Martins and also went to Rhyn Park School. The site was almost a joint bid with Community Online which is partly the reason why you will see the CO links on the pages and very shortly will see a dedicated Big Local section on this site, all managed and moderated by Community Online. So with all that in mind, its pretty local :)
  14. Hi, A couple of forums members have been discussing this topic and we have a couple of local experts who aren't members. So although there aren't any responses we are on the case. I also have a local history book on the way which may shed some light on the paper mills.
  15. I think maybe that's why those people are stuck on that side of the road :)
  16. In response to the article, wouldn’t it be great if the sentence in the opening paragraph said, I have also learnt about the sterling work with the youth in this community. However, I don’t believe and I am not sure other people in the village believe that the Quinta should necessarily provide provisions for the youth in this village. I believe it is up to us alone to provide for our youth and invest in the communities’ future. Our youth will be the next Parish Council, the next Weston Rhyn Trust and the next Institute Committee. I have a worked in various youth activities for over ten years and ran the youthclub in Weston Rhyn for the past four years. The fact that in those four years I have never met the author of this article I think speaks volumes and it appears that they have a somewhat naive idea of how a youth organisation operates. Weston Rhyn youthclub operated with a chairperson, secretary, a treasurer and youth workers all of which are CRB checked. The club was affiliated to the SYA and insured to protect the members and workers. We also got virtually no support from the local council and it also cost us around a £1000 a year to rent a space to run the club despite constant discrimination. Is it easy to sit at home and think that something should be done in the community, maybe have a little rant, maybe even write an article in your local newsletter about it, but thinking that someone else will do it is not the way forward. I think this was my driving force behind community online and the community forum I created, the aim is that it will allow people to meet, to collaborate, to bring our community closer together and in some way hope that we can make a difference to the community in which we live and make it a better place for everyone. This all of course requires one major component, that we as a Community make the choice to get out of our armchairs and actually do something in our own community. So my question goes out not just to the author of the article but to everyone.... What have YOU done to make a difference in YOUR Community?
  17. Hi Robmit, Did you vote in the poll at the top? Without wishing to hijack the thread which is supposed to just be a YES or NO response, is the proposed plan to have a proper rail link from Oswestry on to the Wrexham - Shrewsbury line? or more of hobby/heritage line?
  18. Well done on the results at the Northern Open! How are the Wednesday night sessions going?

  20. You may be aware that I am a Ranger for Sustrans and am assigned some of the routes that this coordinator will be involved in, so I will get to work with the person who ultimately takes this role. If I had more time its something that I would love to do, but unfortunately I have too many other commitments. Its a fantastic opportunity for someone. :)
  21. Lots of discussion about the details and the route across the A5 HERE but I think SimpleSimon is just using this topic for a show of support.
  22. Hi Liz, Sorry to hear you had no walkers this week. Is this a regular occurance? Asumming you can get people to come along. I can put in a calendar post if you like and promote on Twitter/Facebook.
  23. Neo, Fantastic idea, this kind of project ticks a lot of potential funding boxes. Nice idea to get local experts to join the project, this kind of community interaction is a funding gold star. Sophsmiler - Go for it. Pitch this idea to Andy from UnLtd and see how you get on. Good Luck
  24. sophsmiler, I think if you read the comments most people are actually in support of you and your ideas. I know from personal experience how difficult it can be to gain support of a project especially for young people when unfortunately the extreme minority will give an entire age range a stereotype. I really do think you have a mountain to climb, but then if things were easy they wouldn't be worth doing right? I think you need a public display to show that the youth themselves are prepared to do something for themselves and you can win across the general public. There is financial support out there too, a few are mentioned above, UnLtd for example and possibly the Silo Central Trust fund and I also saw this today http://www.shropshir...-organisations/ and although I haven't read it in depth may be able to support your project.
  25. Not from Gobowen, but I think its a great idea, so...... YES
