  1. I agree with the above comments. There some really dangerous potholes in so many parts of the B5069 between Oswestry and Ellesmere; In fact make that SHROPSHIRE! My doctor (who shall be nameless) told me that Shropshire has the smallest population for the largest county in England and highest death toll from dangerous driving.
  2. A BIG can! Thanks for your comment. I have asked people who definitely should know (I'm not mentioning any names here) and no one is certain which is the best way. The very best way, in my "humble" opinion, would be for the Council to erect signs as they have at the Maesbury Roundabout. I now avoid the roundabout in favour of the Whittington Road one when going towards Oswestry. The return trip is much easier and I just keep to the left-hand lane but on the right-hand side of it.
  3. There seems to be a 50/50 split between users of the route B5069 between GOBOWEN and OSWESTRY on how to negotiate the most dangerous roundabout where the route crosses the A5 going towards Oswestry. There are different interpretations in the various Google guides on UK roundabouts, but the general consensus appears to favour getting into the right-hand lane (signalling right of course) ONLY when intending to turn right i.e., towards Wrexham which makes sense to me! Clearly one would get into the left-hand lane (indicating accordingly) for taking the routes to the Orthopaedic hospital and on to the A5 towards Maesbury. However, for going straight over and continuing on the B5069 towards Oswestry it is also recommended getting into the left hand lane without signalling until level with the A5 and then going left towards Oswestry which also makes sense to me! However there is an alternative which is to get into the right-hand lane without signalling and going straight over. The problem is that without clear advance lane indications on the Gobowen side of the roundabout the two methods often coincide! I hope I haven't made this unnecessarily complicated but opinions would be welcome as I have asked around and it does appear that there is no definite rule in the Highway Code which seems a dreadful omission. The advance warning signs when approaching Maesbury roundabout are very clear and now that the B5069 has become a racing track such signs would be very welcome to avoid punch-ups and verbal abuse which ever lane one uses! Good Luck everyone! Rob.
  4. I don't consider your questions silly at all Simon and I consider all comments interesting. As a car driver and cyclist who dreads crossing the roundabout on the the A5 from B5069 to Gobowen road on the other side (very few vehicle drivers know which lane they should be in when taking any direction other than to the right towards Chirk) I do see your point concerning the crossing of the A5 by any sort of train would cause a huge tail-back of vehicles. Regrettably I cant think of anything else silly enough to add - at this time!
  5. The reason the Gobowen car park is already packed is because many cars are from Oswestry. If the train ran from Oswesty then that would surely relieve the situation. Yes I think I got that thanks
  6. If the plans are realised the station would have three platforms, one of which would be for the Heritage Railway.[5] That surely translates into ONE new track which would be the reusing of the old track on Platform THREE. I DOUBT THAT MANY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN USING A DIRTY OLD STEAM ENGINE THESE DAYS THOUGH. HOWEVER AN EFFICIENT MODERN ENGINE WITH A RECONNECTION TO OSWESTRY WOULD BE GREAT (in my most humble opinion of course)
  7. I live on the B5069 Gobowen to Ellesmere Road which I consider should be renamed as Death Alley. Nearly every day I see the unnecessary slaughter of animals and the threat to human life caused the the excessive speed of so many unthinking, uncaring and inconsiderate drivers. 40 miles per hour should be the absolute MAXIMUM speed allowed on such roads and there should be a proportionate penalty for exceeding it; bearing in mind the threat to human life. There is nothing clever about driving at reckless speeds, any fool can do it, but driving a a sensible and safe speed requires common sense and decenfy and at least a modicum of intellignece. If there is a need to arrive at a specific destination at a certain time then get up or leave in time to allow for it without risking other people's lives. Rob
  8. I would like to back you up on this Simon but I am not sure how to go about it. I have my own concerns over the speed at which drivers are allowed by law to risk the lives of others on our roads.
  9. I know we need more housing and especially social housing but not in that location please. I've signed against it already.
  10. I second that.. I dont really blame the council so much as Cameron Clegg and Osborn though. We all pay extrmely high road tax and should be provided with a reasonable surface which is not dangerous nor damaging to our vehicles.
  11. What a pity that important planning applications are not put out to a local public referendum. I guess though that the apathy of the general public makes this unlikely. However it would be one way of ensusring that our elected councilors paid head to the wishes of those who elected them.
  12. Couldn't agree more meandher..
  13. Maybe a good idea to slow the traffic down a bit before the dangerous roundabout and who said steam trains would be used? As for HS2 my own HUMBLE opinion is that would be a huge waste of taxpayers money and a potential desecration of our lovely countryside and villages and the money would be far better spent in reopening certain closed lines for the general public in order to cut down road congestion.
  14. Well done and congratulations. Just wish I could have been there.
  15. I'm replying to my own topic to apologize for the typing (not spelling) errors!!!!!!!!!!! Rob
  16. My friend Sarah-Charlotte Peace was very seriously injured injured by a car hitting her some months ago in Oswestry and is still having to undergo hospital treatment. In nspite of the trauma and pain of the accident Sarah-Charlotte has promotetd a campaign to reduce the maxumum legally permitted speed in towns and villages to 20 MPH. I attach the links to the campaign and hope that many of you will sign the petition. http://peacecycling.blogspot.co.uk/ http://petitions.shropshire.gov.uk/consult.ti/system/viewPetition?petitionid=6538 HAPPY EASTERTIDE TO EVERYONE Rob Mitchell
  17. 4.8 to 5.8 in GOBOWEN!!!!!!! I have never got above .9mb Just can't wait for High Speed or are they talking about HS2 on the Oswestry to Gobowen link? I did hear that it was going to rolled out in May but BT soesn't seem to know this.
  18. I love living in Gobowen but the problem here is staying alive! I live on the B5069 (St. Martins Road) and am appalled at the reckless speeds at which so many drive. I am a keen cyclist (and car driver) but cycling on this road is so dangerous that I have given up using it for cycling. The speed restriction signs and normal limits are ignored by the majority of drivers and I imagine that the only way of improving the situation would be by way of installing cameras at strategic locations. Sadly it seems that the cost of so-doing outweighs the potential benefit of saving lives; although I would have thought from the standard of driving which I observe, day in and day out, that they would provide a fortune for the Council. Of course my comments apply to most of the roads in all areas. Back to the tow paths along the canal which are lovely for pleasure cyling but not much use to many who want to cycle to work. On a happier subject Iam looking forward to better weather so that I can enoy another happy ride to Llangollen. Regards to everyone, Rob

    Gobowen 1925

I love the postcard of Gobowen and, as Simon states, the centre has not changed much. It is a nice keepsake and thanks for posting it. Rob
  20. Hi Lee, I have now said a definite YES! I am reporting the news concerning the reinstatement of the line as reported in the Oswestry & Border Chronicle of Thursday November 8, 2012. Rather than post an epistle on this site I am happy to send you a copy of the article if you wish. Regards, Rob
  21. I think this is an excellent idea and I am all for it. However it has to be borne in mind that the proposed reopening of the rail link between Gobowen and Oswestry is now likely to proceed and I am doubtful that the existing route is wide enough to accommodate both the rail line and a foot/cycling path. I am a keen walker and cyclist and often cycle into Oswestry (trying not to get killed by the excessive speed of most motorists) but I do give priority to the reinstatement of the rail service if both cannot be accommodated. Rob.
