I may have some wonderful news for you, Rob: My spies have been out and they tell me that a meeting was held to discuss the old station and the possibility of turning it into a "community hub". I've been informed that representatives from Cambrian Railways, SCURA, Chirk Railway Station, Selattyn & Gobowen Parish Council and Shropshire Town & Rural Housing were in attendance. Apparently they discussed the possibility of relocating Gobowen library there, developing a café and waiting room, perhaps a ticket office...maybe even having a bridge to cross the line from one platform to the other. Those present think they can obtain the building without payment.

On the general subject of roundabouts, particularly the 3 exits ones such as in Oswestry at the top of Salop/Shrewsbury Road and on the Church Street/Smithfield Road junction: The rule is you give way to vehicles on the right, so who gives way to who? I've seen all sorts of near missis and fraying tempers on these small roundabouts.

The candidates are displayed on the Gobowen parish notice board outside the library. I think there were some hustings that took place last week, including one held in a church and another held outside in the rain on The Cross. The details of the Polling Stations in Gobowen are in the calendar, but I don't see anything about stations in Weston Rhyn, Selattyn or St. Martins. Perhaps someone working within those communities should upload the details.

The National Plant Monitoring Scheme was launched at the earlier this year. The scheme is the first of its kind and asks for volunteers across the United Kingdom to visit a kilometre square local to them and record the plants they find there in several different plots. The scheme will enable us to explore how plants in different habitats are responding to changes in the environment. You may like to be involved in this government backed scheme which is being delivered by a partnership comprising Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland; Centre for Ecology; Joint Nature Conservation Committee and Plantlife. What support will volunteers get? n All volunteers registering for a square on www.npms.org.uk will receive a survey pack (survey guidance; species list; species guidebook) n All volunteers will be able to access telephone and email support provided by the volunteer coordinator n All volunteers will be able to access free training courses Additional information Squares have been randomly selected across the UK and it is possible to see if there is a square in your area by visiting the website above. Volunteers are asked to record up to 30 plant species in any one square or linear plot as long as it fits into 1 of the 28 NPMS habitats.
