Is the Zebra Crossing working!

Recommended Posts

Four times I've been standing on the curb of the new Zebra Crossing in the centre of Gobowen waiting to get across and the traffic have just wizzed by, totally ignoring me!

I thought the idea was the traffic had to stop to make way for the pedestrians!

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Well the Highway Code Rule 195 says....

As you approach a zebra crossing

  • Look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
  • You MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved on to the crossing
  • Allow more time for stopping on wet and icy roads
  • Do not wave or use your your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
  • Be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing

A zebra crossing with a central island is two separate crossings.

Also references the 'law' document as The Zebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrians Crossings Regulations and General Directions 1997. Which is a 37 page document and I am sure a jolly good read :)
