  1. According to the news yesterday there are plans for widespread cuts to NHS services, not just the potential loss of A&E in Shrewsbury, and I expect the reason given will be not enough qualified staff.

The potential cuts in the BBC reports (but uncovered by 38 Degrees) will go out to consultation to the public next year, but people in the Oswestry area already have experience of this process.

So the question is, when is a consultation a consultation?

  2. It strikes me that dairy farmers are in meltdown at the moment. Meanwhile, our children are feeding on sugary drinks.

We have 3 primary schools in our villages. Is there any way the BiG Local could organise support for local dairy farmers by setting up a scheme to supply free milk to local schools. Any excess milk could perhaps be distributed via local meals on wheels teams to the elderly.

    It's just a suggestion...

  3. Both St. Martins and S&GPC have relatively new clerks that live outside the area.

They are paid by their respective councils to do a job, and part of that is to provide information on the decisions the councils make on behalf on the parishioners. However, there are pre-existing facilities for this; you can approach the council and ask for the agenda and minutes and these documents must be displayed on parish notice boards, if there is a parish website, then up to date documents must be displayed there. In Gobowen the minutes are available in the library.

Parishioners can attend monthly council meetings and talk freely for a period before the meeting. They can also approach the clerk and have an item put on the agenda.

Clerks are not required to make information available above and beyond what they are actually contracted to do. Having said that, community online is very much a one stop shop and I don't see any reason why parish documents cannot be sent to CO at the same time as they are sent to councillors (5 full working days before the meeting itself).

As to the wider challenges faced by Shropshire Council (see the previous uploaded clip), I suspect that many, many people are unaware of the cuts coming down the line, and indeed the responsibilities that small parish council are having to contribute to now that the unitary authority slowly reduces its services.

  4. You are encouraged to comment on the proposals for Gobowen Library by completing a consultation document:

Paper copies are available from Gobowen Library, the Post Office, the Pavilion and Gobowen Primary School.

On-line documents are available at www.shropshire.gov.uk/get-involved and search for Gobowen Library.

Closing date for comments: 21st December 2015.

For further details contact Corrie on 01691 677306 or Teresa on 01691 677338.

  5. During the summer Selattyn & Gobowen Parish Council will be introducing a new policy to tackle the problem of dog fouling on Gobowen Playing Field.

All discarded dog faeces left by irresponsible owners will be highlighted with highly visible bio-degradable paint.

The council hope to make the playing field a clean and environmentally safe place for everyone to use.

  6. Yes, I attended the meeting.

Organisations and individuals are being encoraged to contact the LJC for funds to run youth services. This is similiar to a sceme that Oswestry town currently has in place (a pot of money that is available over a specidied time).

My understanding is that 'Fusion Arts' will be doing outreach work in all 3 villages. Fusion Arts are based in the Northwest Centre.

  7. This distributed in Hengoed by West Mercia Police:

    “Can You Help?

It is my to my deepest regret that unfortunately it has come to the police’s attention that there have been several instances where an address on City Lane and a vehicle associated with the address have been targeted.

The basis of this unwanted attention is a person/s unknown at this time throwing eggs at the property and the vehicle. Fortunately at this time there has been no damaged caused.

Historically this behaviour has been associated with children and not adults, so I am requesting that parents, guardians please pass on our concerns to your children.”

  8. I may have some wonderful news for you, Rob:

My spies have been out and they tell me that a meeting was held to discuss the old station and the possibility of turning it into a "community hub". I've been informed that representatives from Cambrian Railways, SCURA, Chirk Railway Station, Selattyn & Gobowen Parish Council and Shropshire Town & Rural Housing were in attendance.

Apparently they discussed the possibility of relocating Gobowen library there, developing a café and waiting room, perhaps a ticket office...maybe even having a bridge to cross the line from one platform to the other.

Those present think they can obtain the building without payment.

  9. On the general subject of roundabouts, particularly the 3 exits ones such as in Oswestry at the top of Salop/Shrewsbury Road and on the Church Street/Smithfield Road junction:

The rule is you give way to vehicles on the right, so who gives way to who?

I've seen all sorts of near missis and fraying tempers on these small roundabouts.

  10. The candidates are displayed on the Gobowen parish notice board outside the library.

I think there were some hustings that took place last week, including one held in a church and another held outside in the rain on The Cross.

The details of the Polling Stations in Gobowen are in the calendar, but I don't see anything about stations in Weston Rhyn, Selattyn or St. Martins. Perhaps someone working within those communities should upload the details.

  11. The National Plant Monitoring Scheme was launched at the earlier this year. The scheme is the first of its kind and asks for volunteers across the United Kingdom to visit a kilometre square local to them and record the plants they find there in several different plots. The scheme will enable us to explore how plants in different habitats are responding to changes in the environment.

You may like to be involved in this government backed scheme which is being delivered by a partnership comprising Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland; Centre for Ecology; Joint Nature Conservation Committee and Plantlife.

    What support will volunteers get?

n All volunteers registering for a square on www.npms.org.uk will receive a survey pack (survey guidance; species list; species guidebook)

n All volunteers will  be able to access telephone and email support provided by the volunteer  coordinator

n All volunteers will be able to access free training courses

    Additional information

Squares have been randomly selected across the UK and it is possible to see if there is a square in your area by visiting the website above.

Volunteers are asked to record up to 30 plant species in any one square or linear plot as long as it fits into 1 of  the 28 NPMS habitats. Volunteers carry out the survey of their plots 2 times per year. Volunteers may be individuals or small groups .

  12. Does anyone have an explanation of the electrical power cut Gobowen experienced a couple of weeks ago?

The lights went out at about 10pm. Some stayed out for up to 2 hours.

It effected residential properties and side street lights.

I've seen nothing in the press, but I do know the most of Gobowen was cut off.
