  1. Yes, this gets my support.

There's a guy moved into a house close by just over a year ago. There's a Cherry Blossom Tree on the front lawn and one of the first things he did was lobb chunks off it with a hacksaw.

And is just about survived, managing to glow long thin branches in the spring with a little bit of blossom.

Yesterday he was at it again with the hacksaw. I don't hold out much hope for it. There were shrubs and trees planted by the builders on the front lawns of all the houses on this estate. All but a very few have been cut down.

  2. @ Robmit:

Excepted, but...would commuters currently using the Gobowen car park use a heritage (steam) service operated by volunteers to get to Gobowen and back to Oswestry at the end of the working day?

Remember, CHR are after money from the Lottery Heritage Fund, and the key word here is "heritage". That word doesn't include cycle/walking routes or any kind of HS2 service.

It also means that steam trains will be crossing the bypass during rush hours (just think about that).

Steam trains need coal and water. Where would that be stored?

Do you think Network Rail will work in harmony with CHR?

I'm full of silly questions and I'm not expecting answers from you. But I am expecting them from the people who bought the line in the first place (and that, I'm afraid, was all of us).

  3. A modern train can be driven from either direction, but a steam engine has to be put at the front of the carriages, and that means building a loop:

The steam train and carriages come into the station and the passengers disembark onto the new platform (but the platform has to connected with something for the passengers to leave the station - a new footbridge, perhaps?). The engine is then disconnected from the carriages and moves further down the line, over some points and then shunted up a new line, over some more points to rejoin the original line and then recoupled to the carriages for its journey home. Clear?

It will have to be some kind of heritage service in order for them to get the £10,000,000 award...so no modern locomotive I'm afraid. It is very unlikely that network Rail would allow CHR to use any of their platforms.

The 3rd track is a safeguard should anything go wrong with the original engine. It would allow for a second engine to arrive in the station from Oswestry.

And then, there's the little problem about parking to handle the masses of tourists coming to Gobowen to ride on the steam service. The existing car park is already at capacity.

  4. The Gobowen I.T. Learning Project is supported by UnLtd.

We are a team of volunteers who meet in Gobowen Pavilion, St. Martins Road, Gobowen, SY11 3PL every Thursday morning from 10 am during term time.

We are now offering all Job Hunters a FREE Memory Stick if you'll let us help you register with the Universal Jobmatch. So, if you're looking for a job but struggling with the I.T. side, please let us help.

  5. The BBC television drama series “Doctor Who” is 50 years old this autumn. To celebrate his birthday Oswestry Town Market in association with Community-Online are giving YOU the chance to win an exclusive Doctor Who t-shirt featuring a caricature of your favourite Doctor.

11 caricatures of all the Doctors with quotes will be displayed close to the cafe, upstairs in Oswestry Town Market from early November. Regular Community-Online users will have seen the caricatures and quotes as my avatar throughout 2013.

Can you identify from what Doctor Who stories each of the eleven quotes come?

If you can, write your answers on a postcard or sealed down envelope and send them to the address below along with your t-shirt size (S, M, L, XL, XXL), the Doctor you want printed on the shirt and your own name and address.

David Clough, Dr Who T-Shirt Competition, The Guildhall, Oswestry, Shropshire, SY11 1PZ

  6. I've heard on the grapevine that applications for funding for community projects through UnLtd via SRCC are down. There's something about how to go about putting in an application and the different types of awards available in the autumn 2013 issue of the Selattyn & Gobowen Parish Roundabout. This will be online here when I've finished putting it together.

  7. I will be attending a meeting with Access next Tuesday morning from 10.30am at the Memorial Hall in Oswestry. I'm going to try and persuade them to look at the Gobowen and Whittington Roundabouts along the bypass in regard to people with disabilities (sight, hearing, mobility) to see what challenges they face getting to town other than by car or bus.
