Maggie 65 Report post Posted May 31, 2015 The Main Modifications by the Planning Inspector on Shropshire's SamDev have just been published. I'm so angry about this: a long process of so called consultation to develop the SamDev (Local plan) for Shropshire has ignored both local opposition, and international archaeological input to stubbornly go ahead with a development site close to Old Oswestry Hillfort. This sets a precedent for England where heritage designations now mean nothing under planning laws. Gobowen and Selattyn Parish Council opposed these preferred sites from the beginning of the process, and Oswestry Town Council also objected, but have been ignored. This national archaeological blog site sums it up well. http://thepipeline.info/blog/2015/05/30/old-oswestry-controversy-set-to-reignite/ We will fight on! Maggie 65 Report post Posted June 29, 2015 Great article about Old Oswestry and the planning concerns in the Observer this Sunday http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/jun/27/old-oswestry-hill-fort-housing-development A quote from Sir Barry Cunliffe, who is the world authority on Iron Age Hillforts: “I think that this [proposed development] has grossly overstepped what is ethically acceptable. Old Oswestry Hill Fort is such a good – well, bad – case. It is stark. If we’re going to win the argument at all, this is one where it could be fought fairly. “The hill fort is perfectly safe and extremely well looked after by Historic England. But there is a limit to what Historic England can reasonably do. “The setting of the hill fort is the issue here. The objectors to the development have a very, very strong case. It [The proposed scheme] ruins the setting.”
