Weston Rhyn has been disregarded by Shropshire Council for far too long and things are coming to a head. All we ever get are broken promises whilst we see other parishes obtain their necessary infrastructure improvements. The roundabout at the top of the village, and the bends leading in to it are very dangerous and now the markings have faded so much that when the road is wet you would not even know it was a roundabout. Shropshire Star are covering our concerns http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2016/04/14/shropshire-council-treating-village-like-a-poor-relation/
Why not come along to the Parish Councils annual meeting on 25th at 7 pm in the institute and let the parish council know what you think, and what you would have on your wish list for the village.

Thats altogether a lot of people who follow whats on this site. Lots of people don't want to do more than read comments.

How many people follow the CO Facebook page?

It is the only place o see all the minutes in the one place so is useful. Can the admin. email all clerks again and ask them to post the minutes? It would also be very useful to have something from the LJC meetings. Our last one had the Shrops Council Chief Exec talking about all the cuts and how it was going to fall to our local villages to pick up the pieces and run services we wanted. So fairly important! Here is the film that he showed us. Should stimulate debate.

Good idea Robmit but might it be cheaper to put an article in each village magazine and reach everyone that way?

So much for consultation and localism. SC have gone abainst the wishes of local parish council and of residents!

Maybe you could ask for the Parish's Neighbourhood Plan or its Parish Plan to be updated by the Parish Council? Shropshire Council have to take that into account at planning stages.
Couldn't agree more that we should insist that all new build has solar panels and passive heating. You can get solar roof tiles which look just like ordinary tiles too. Personally I am waiting for solar panels to become available that are light weight enough to go on the roof of our victorian house. Also we await the development of a system to feed power down from there which doesn't damage tiles by drilling through them (and hence create cracks and leaks).

Parish Councils have diminished powers in planning, and cannot make those sorts of design demands. That is down to Shropshire Council. Have a look on their website for current requirements for 'sustainability' e.g. here http://shropshire.gov.uk/media/836725/sustainability-checklist-template.pdf

Nice one Lee. Great to see innovation recognised. When will we see your paddle boards on the canal?

Does anyone have any photographs etc which have local WW1 soldiers in them? Royal Welsh Fusiliers Museum are looking for old photos, and many lads from our villages joined them in Pals regiments.
This is the list of WW1 soldiers with some information about some of them;
on Weston Rhyn war Memorial http://www.clwydfhs.org.uk/cofadeiladau/westonrhyn_wm.htm
St Martins http://www.clwydfhs.org.uk/cofadeiladau/stmartins_wm.htm
and Gobowen http://www.clwydfhs.org.uk/cofadeiladau/gobowen_wm.htm
If you know anything about any of these poor lads please post information here. I'm sure many of us are interested in the families who lived here 100 years ago.

Well done y'all, and thanks to Bethan for keeping us all informed. https://www.facebook.com/groups/634108443357107/?pnref=lhc

Have you asked to speak? What do our local councillors intend to say? Who is going to speak up for the parish Council? I've read the agenda and notes and there is a huge amount of objections listed which has obviously amended the application a bit, but do you think this slightly smaller array will help at all?

Great article about Old Oswestry and the planning concerns in the Observer this Sunday http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/jun/27/old-oswestry-hill-fort-housing-development
A quote from Sir Barry Cunliffe, who is the world authority on Iron Age Hillforts:
“I think that this [proposed development] has grossly overstepped what is ethically acceptable. Old Oswestry Hill Fort is such a good – well, bad – case. It is stark. If we’re going to win the argument at all, this is one where it could be fought fairly.
“The hill fort is perfectly safe and extremely well looked after by Historic England. But there is a limit to what Historic England can reasonably do.
“The setting of the hill fort is the issue here. The objectors to the development have a very, very strong case. It [The proposed scheme] ruins the setting.”

The application for a large scale development of houses in Aspen Grange has been thrown out by councilors despite officer recommendations for it to go ahead (it was part of the SamDev offer from Weston Rhyn). After hearing about flood and sewerage problems for residents in Aspen Grange, the Parish Council changed their minds and decided not to support the development because it was only going to make things a lot worse for the residents of the area, Shropshire Councillors supported this decision, Welsh water stated that houses could be built, but, until new sewers were built they would not pass them as safe to live in.
That leaves the residents of Weston Rhyn in a bit of a quandary. We cannot build any more houses until we have an improved sewer system, but Welsh Water have no plans to do this.

Andy, will you be running these in the other villages too? (No direct public transport links to St M. etc)

The Main Modifications by the Planning Inspector on Shropshire's SamDev have just been published.
I'm so angry about this: a long process of so called consultation to develop the SamDev (Local plan) for Shropshire has ignored both local opposition, and international archaeological input to stubbornly go ahead with a development site close to Old Oswestry Hillfort. This sets a precedent for England where heritage designations now mean nothing under planning laws.
Gobowen and Selattyn Parish Council opposed these preferred sites from the beginning of the process, and Oswestry Town Council also objected, but have been ignored.
This national archaeological blog site sums it up well. http://thepipeline.info/blog/2015/05/30/old-oswestry-controversy-set-to-reignite/
We will fight on!

Article in the Shrops Star about the meeting.
http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2015/05/21/redesign-of-library-near-oswestry-may-help-its-usage/
Is anyone else as cynical as me when I wonder if the fact that Gobowen Library is in the Big Local area has influenced the council in decisions about which libraries in the county can be palmed off to 'the community' to run?

No-one seems to use the Blog part of this site, so I am wondering how many of us have our own separate wordpress blog sites? It would be interesting to learn about all that is going on in the 3 villages.
A new group is being set up for wordpress users in the Oswestry area, and the first meeting is next Wednesday, May 13th 7-9 pm in Baby Bird cafe. Follow this link for more information. http://www.meetup.com/Shropshire-WordPress-Meetup/events/221835173/

Well, I see from the Shroppie Star that HA are going to be doing a MileEnd on Gledrid roundabout, with night closures through to September. We were all wondering what the purpose was of the cones that have been there for some time.
http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2015/05/03/fury-at-three-month-overnight-closure-proposal-for-a5/
Expect chaos around the villages as drivers try to avoid the roundabout, and pray that the engineers have learnt from MileEnd that nice designs on paper don't necessarily transfer into the real world of incompetent drivers.
What does everyone else think?

Only relevant thing specific for our villages is comments by the candidates on the Old Oswestry campaign facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/OldOswestryHillfort?ref=hl
they have been spectacular by their absence.

The Planning Inspector's Major Recommendations on the Shropshire Council's SamDev are due out at the beginning of this week, so here is the latest press release from the Hillfort campaign, http://www.shropshirelive.com/2015/03/29/bbc-radio-4-puts-threatened-shropshire-hillfort-in-national-spotlight/
