  1. A Very moving and insightful response to some of the negativity around in the area towards young people. I wish the green room every success too. Glad to see that the LJC gave them some money. As I remember it the Silo also served as a centre for computing in the village and also supported older people too. Will there be a broadplace in Gobowen for everyone to use?
  2. Shropshire Council got planning permission earlier this year to put in a small tourists car park next to Gledrid Canal bridge on the opposite side of Oaklands Road to the 'Poachers Pocket'. They have now found the funding to go ahead with this project. This will provide disabled access onto the tow-path, and have interpretation. Gledrid Bridge is the end of the World Heritage Site as designated on a map, so Gledrid will become 'The Gateway' to the World Heritage Site. There is a tourism strategy for the world heritage site going the rounds (try Wrexham Borough website, although I couldn't see it on there the other day), which has suggestions for a water bus linking sites along the whole 11 miles of the WHS starting from the Lion Quays at our end. Personally I would like to see more made of the canal in our area, and extending the advantages of all these extra visitors down into St Martins and Gobowen. Wrexham Council haven't been slow in realising the economic advantages of the WHS and all the new tourists who are just now discovering the area for the first time.
  3. Congratulations and very well done. Is there a way that we who keep our money under the mattress can still sponsor you with real money?

  5. Oh yeh and I love the open countryside too. Went out with the dog this afternoon and such a pleasure to be in such beautiful surroundings without having to drive. Notice that ?Council are slowly renewing stiles too, Now I have just finished putting together a display for the OOLAP Archaeology Seminar tomorrow (or rather today, its late), and am really looking forward to hearing some interesting talks tomorrow but first I need some sleep.
  6. I used to love the fireworks up at the Quinta, but now we have the Lantern Parade in St Martins instead (usually with fire shows) which is usually brilliant (tonight, Saturday). I won't be able to go tonight, so hope someone tells us how it went. I don't know what the graham edwards trophy or the rose queen were, but they sound great. Why can't they be run again? (and thanks for saving me from the men in white coats :D )
  7. Sadly here we go, I'm talking to myself
  8. I'm really enjoying this site at the moment, but wondering why people are lurking but not joining in. I'll end up talking to myself at this rate and then they will have a reason to come and take me away! ;)
  9. We are now fully booked! Have had to ask for some extra lunches to be made up because of more people than were expected. Please Please don't try to come on the day without a ticket!
  10. Apparently there is one in Chester somewhere which has a cashpoint machine inside, plus a phone. (Don't know who runs the phone or monitors the cashpoint! note I am not suggesting such a liability for Selattyn)
  11. What a fantastic opportunity to do something interesting! I remember visiting the Eden Centre before it was finished, and there were exhibitions within small sheds which I thought were amazing. One about rubber was particularly imaginative with lots of (small) touchy feely things around the walls and floor. Information was in laminated book form. So my suggestion would be 'History of Selattyn in miniature'. Maybe have miniature copies of some of the 'After Offa' Art work (which look good at postcard size), and laminate some of the stories.
  12. No-one who attended has put an answer on this site so: I've spoken to someone who was there. The event was very successful, there will be a photo in the Advertizer next week. Lots of cakes, and lots of people. £370 made to be split between the chapel and the community group. Good result for all the hard work.
  13. Annual Trip for Christmas Shopping to Merry Hill Centre in Dudley In aid of Chirk Bank Community Group 12th December Coach will leave Weston Rhyn Institute at 9.30 a.m. picking up in Chirk Bank and Chirk Tickets cost £10 per seat Booking essential contact Angela on 770016
  14. As a contrast to grumblings and mumblings I thought it would be nice to talk about what makes us feel good about this area. So what makes me feel warm inside (besides Glenmorangie and Cheap wine).. difficult its much easier to grumble, I love the countryside around the area, particularly Ifton Meadows and Old Oswestry but also the Racecourse. I love the way going for a walk with the dog turns into a social event, I love the history of the area and the sense of pride that older residents take in their past plus the undercurrent of anarchy running through a lot of their stories. I love being able to grumble.
  15. Watch out Gobowen, speed camera there from Monday, see Shropshire Star http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2011/10/20/gobowen-to-get-speed-camera/
  16. Think this is a wonderful idea in the face of government cuts to libraries. Goes back to the old ideal of Miners Institutes. Its an idea for the other villages to follow.

Yeh, About broadband, has anyone looked at speeds across our villages? Would be easy enough to do a quick survey via people using this site because there are several online sites that test your download speed for you. I imagine it varies considerably across our area.

Thanks Simon. Did anyone mention this forum starting up by any chance?

Can someone who went to the meeting last night report back to those of us who were too snug and warm at home to head out to St Martins?
  20. Right good it does work! Didn't look like it would when I was writing it.
  21. I've just had an email from Big Local. They are running a series of events around the country for people who live in Big Local areas to find out what other areas are doing and how they are proceeding. The first one is 18-19 November in Liverpool called 'Community buildings and trusts: what makes them work?' They pay travel and childcare costs. ( I have tried to attach the flier which gives full details and contacts but if it doesn't work maybe an administrator could help sort it out.) i'VE TAKEN THIS ATTACHMENT DOWN AS OUT OF DATE NOW
  22. Can we have a separate thread for Big Local News and Comments? Things are going to start to kick off soon so would be good. I have some information about free events which I will put on Coffee Lounge in mean time.
  23. Chirk Bank Memories The podcasts and video produced by Audioguide Ltd and residents of Chirk Bank for the Aqueducks are now available via the internet. The slide show can be found on You tube http://youtu.be/Uu1XiYn24bw and this link takes you to the podcasts, http://mobile.audio-...e.co.uk/home/cb These have been used for blue tooth, QR codes and podcast distribution to 3G mobile phones during this summer for visitors to Chirk Bank and have proved very popular. It is very fitting that we are going to use state of the art technology to interpret something (the canal and aqueduct) that was itself state of the art 200 years ago. Local people will probably recognise many of the voices on the podcasts. If you've got ant more stories get in touch with Aqueducks. http://www.aqueducks.org Aqueducks only cover the World Heritage Site but it would be fun to extend this sort of thing along the canal through St Martins and Gobowen. I've just worked out how to do links so these addresses above should now go where I want them to and no copying and pasting needed.
  24. Thought it might be good to have a thread where we could let off steam about local stuff that gets us cross! Some suggestions could be Gledrid Roundabout, Potholes in the road, oh I don't know, but can we try not to be too negative, and suggest ways to put things right as well as grumbling. Maybe we could have a league table for the longest wait to get out onto Gledrid Roundabout! What d'ya think?
